Achievement: Happy New Year! by Rinkara Achievement: Happy New Year! by Rinkara
:iconfiercedietyjon: asked if I could draw everyone celebrating the new year at Valak Mountain, and I said I'd try...

Many, many hours later, I'm wondering where it all went wrong but I finished this painting thing (it's supposed to be in reference to that damned achievement). I don't try to actually paint, ever, so that's why it's so wonky.

Anyway, happy new year everyone!

It gives me really good vibes, but if you want me to give constructive criticism, I'd be happy to.

The characters themselves are actually fine, but with the way the picture is framed it gives them too much focus. They're here to celebrate a new year and the wonderful world they're in (hence stargazing at the most mesmerising place in the game :D) but the background doesn't take up enough focus.

The main reason I think this is is because the view of the sky is offset. The cave obscures an open view from the center; when I look at the picture, I feel I have to veer to the right to see the main attraction. I like the cavernous feel this has, but the balance is offset. Cut back the rock ceiling from the left all the way back to the corner so we can see the sky more.

I'll also mention that I think the slope at the bottom takes up too much space. It's not necessarily wrong, but given the ratio between high and low that the pic should have, the high deserves more than the low.

My other criticism? The lighting is too dim. Valak Mountain is a place which defies our expectations of day and night - the day feels chilling and sombre, but the night has moments of great awe and silent wonder. The crystals weren't just coloured yellow - they had a great energy within them that ascended to the heavens.

This doesn't reflect that, and so we lack a feeling of wonder. The crystals should be much brighter than they are, wherever they are on the picture. I'd also suggest adding stars to the sky to make it more appealing, and also to better understand why the cast are looking up at it - we don't want it losing out to the shiny crystals now, do we?

But still, good effort! Valak Mountain is my favourite place on Bionis, and the nighttime vibe is a huge part of the reason why. Love your Xenoblade fanart, and I'm looking forward to your next piece!

Also I'm sorry if I sounded rude. I'm actually really hard on myself already, I know all those things are wrong with it and am very disappointed that I couldn't get this to do what I wanted. It was my first attempt at painting "seriously", with a complex background (I actually referenced an actual location in the game but should have used more artistic license I guess since the composition is screwed). Basically I know I get a "you tried" star on this one. I appreciate you taking the time to critique anyway.

Er, I didn't really ask for criticism (I guess it looks that way now that I re-read it), and I know it's a poor attempt. But at some point I had to stop because I had worked far too long on it already.

All I can really say about the lighting is that it's supposed to be dawn, referencing the achievement in the game (that's why they're looking), and so I took several references of what the map looks like at dawn and used the same color scheme, with the crystals starting to fade and all that. It didn't seem to work since you didn't get the point of the picture, so that's my fault.
